How to apply to The Opinion
PHOTOGRAPHERS:
We are looking to fill approximately two (2) photographer positions.
Basic Responsibilities:
~ Photographers are responsible for... taking pictures!
Schedules and assignments will be determined via discussion
with the Editors-In-Chief and the Executive Editor.
~ Photographers are allowed to write columns/articles for The
Opinion as well and they will have the independent authority
to write these articles for The Opinion at their will.
~ Photographers must submit all articles to the
Submissions Editor by the monthly deadline for
review. Photographers must agree to allow the Copy Editors,
Submissions Editor, Executive Editor, and Editor-In-Chief edit
their articles for length, grammar, and punctuation. These
Editors will never make changes that significantly alter the
content or character of the piece.
~ Submit all photographs to The Opinion by the submission
deadline of their assigned months.
~ Maintain any and all confidential information obtained in the course of their work for The Opinion.

CONTRIBUTING WRITERS:
We are looking to fill as many of these positions as possible.
Basic Responsibilities:
~ Contributing three to six (3-6) articles per academic year.
This translates to writing one (1) article roughly every other
month between September and May.
~ Contributing writers are primarily responsible for writing
opinion pieces (Op-Eds) and news pieces on various topics
both law related and not.
~ Contributing writers must submit all articles to the
Submissions Editor by the monthly deadline for
review. Contributing writers must agree to allow the Copy &
Submissions, and Executive Editors, and Editor-In-Chief edit
their articles for length, grammar, and punctuation. These
Editors will never make changes that significantly alter the
content or character of the piece.
~ Submit all columns to The Opinion by the submission
deadline of their assigned months.
~ Maintain any and all confidential information obtained in the
course of their work for The Opinion.

MEMIST/COMIC:
Some papers have the comics, other papers have political cartoons, well The Opinion has memes! We are looking to fill approximately two (2) "Memeist" positions.
Basic Responsibilities:
~ Contributing nine (9) memes per academic year. This
translates to creating one (1) meme per month between
September and May.
~ Memist/Comics are allowed to write columns/articles for The Opinion as well and they will have the independent authority to write these articles for The Opinion at their will.
~ Memist/Comics must submit all articles to the
Submissions Editor by the monthly deadline for
review. Memist/Comics must agree to allow the Copy Editors,
Submissions Editor, Executive Editor, and Editor-In-Chief edit
their articles for length, grammar, and punctuation. These
Editors will never make changes that significantly alter the
content or character of the piece.
~ The Memist will have full creative license to create the
"Meme of the Month."
~ Submit all memes to The Opinion by the submission
deadline of each month.

WEB EDITOR:
We are looking to fill approximately one (1) web editor position.
Basic Responsibilities:
~ Contributing two to three (2-3) articles per academic year. This translates to writing one (1) article roughly every two
(2) months between September and May.
~ The Web Editor must submit all articles to the
Submissions Editor by the monthly deadline for review.
The Web Editor must agree to allow the Copy Editors,
Submissions Editor, Executive Editor, and Editor-In-Chief edit
their articles for length, grammar, and punctuation. These
Editors will never make changes that significantly alter the
content or character of the piece.
~ Web Editors are primarily responsible for maintaining and
updating the website of The Opinion. Additionally, web
editors will be responsible for updating the various social
media sites utilized by The Opinion to spread information and
news to the SUNY Buffalo Law School community.
~ The Web Editor will be responsible for coordinating
the publication of the digital version of The Opinion each
month.
~ Submit all columns to The Opinion by the submission
deadline of their assigned months.
~ Maintain any and all confidential information obtained in the
course of their work for The Opinion.

GUEST AUTHORS:
~ Guest Authors are any individuals who are not currently
enrolled SUNY Buffalo Law School Students (Ex: SUNY Buffalo
Law School Faculty/Staff, Law School Alumni, Members of the
Western New York Legal Community, etc.)
~ Guest Authors are primarily responsible for writing opinion
pieces (Op-Eds) and news pieces on various topics both law
related and not.
~ Guest Authors must submit all articles to the Submissions
Editor by the monthly deadline for review.
~ Guest Authors must agree to allow the Submissions Editor,
Executive Editor, and Editor-In-Chief for review. Any edits to
their articles for length, grammar, and punctuation will be
noted and sent back to the Guest Author for approval prior
to publication. Our Editors will never make changes that
significantly alter the content or character of the piece.
~ Submit all columns to The Opinion by the submission
deadline of their assigned months.
~ Maintain any and all confidential information obtained in the
course of their work for The Opinion.

How to Apply to The Opinion

(C) A Creative or Editorial Writing Sample one to three (1-3) pages in length
The descriptions above are approximations of what The Opinion is looking for, but please do not let them dictate what positions you do or do not apply for. We understand that you have homework, clinical hours, jobs, and lives outside of The Opinion (so do we!) and we want as many people as possible to be able to participate in our little paper. If you wish to write more or less than a description describes let us know in your application email. We will work with you to determine a position and schedule that works for you!
NOTE: Please do not send us your LAWR Memos! While we're sure that they were all beautiful that is not the "type" of writing sample we would like to read.

At present, The Opinion is looking for law school students
and faculty members to fill the following positions:
COPY EDITORS:
We are looking to fill approximately three (3) copy editor positions.
Basic Responsibilities:
~ Copy Editors have the independent authority to write article for The
Opinion at their will. We do request that our Copy Editors contribute
articles to The Opinion at least twice (2) during the academic year.
~ Review eight to ten (8-10) articles per academic year. This
translates to reviewing one to two (1-2) articles roughly every month
between September and May.
* Reviewing Entails: Copy Editors are primarily responsible for
double-checking the columns and works of contributing writers
and guest authors for grammatical errors, spelling mistakes,
and formatting issues. Additionally, copy editors are responsible
for a light amount of "fact checking" with regards to certain
articles submitted to The Opinion.
~ Copy Editors must submit all articles to the Submissions Editor by the
monthly deadline for review. Copy Editors must agree to allow the
Executive Editor and Editor-In-Chief edit their articles for length,
grammar, and punctuation. These Editors will never make changes that
significantly alter the content or character of the piece.
~ Submit all columns to The Opinion by the submission deadline of their
assigned months.
~ Maintain any and all confidential information obtained in the course of
their work for The Opinion.

MANAGING EDITORS: Executive
We are looking to fill approximately one (1) executive editor position.
Basic Responsibilities:
~ Serve as the #2 in command of The Opinion.
~ Contributing four to five (4-5) articles per academic year. This
translates to writing one (1) article roughly every other month between
September and May.
~ The Executive Editor must submit all articles to the Copy Editors by the
monthly deadline for review. Executive Editor must agree to allow the Copy Editors and the Editor-In-Chief edit their articles for length,
grammar, and punctuation. These Editors will never make changes that
significantly alter the content or character of the piece.
~ Reviewing final drafts of issue publications with the Editor-In-Chief
prior to it being sent to the printers.
~ Oversee all the contributing writers, subordinate editors, and guest
authors to ensure that they are meeting their assigned deadlines.
~ Submit all columns to The Opinion by the submission deadline of their
assigned months.
~ Maintain any and all confidential information obtained in the course of
their work for The Opinion.

MANAGING EDITORS: Submissions
We are looking to fill approximately one (1) submissions editor position.
Basic Responsibilities:
~ Contributing four to five (4-5) articles per academic year. This
translates to writing one (1) article roughly every other month between
September and May.
~ The Submissions Editor must agree to allow the Copy Editors, Executive
Editor, and the Editor-In-Chief edit their articles for length,
grammar, and punctuation. These Editors will never make changes that
significantly alter the content or character of the piece.
~ Take all submitted articles and do initial read-through to determine if
article is ready for publication, should be held for publication in a
different issue, or should be sent back to the author for further
investigation, extensive editing, or fact-checking.
~ Distribute all articles approved for publication to the various Copy
Editors for further review and grammar/spelling check.
~ After all final versions of articles ready for publication are received from
the Copy Editors, forward them to the Editors-In-Chief and Executive
Editor for final draft review of the full issue publication.
~ Submit all columns to The Opinion by the submission deadline of their
assigned months.
~ Maintain any and all confidential information obtained in the course of
their work for The Opinion.

MANAGING EDITORS: Features
We are looking to fill approximately one (1) features editor position.
Basic Responsibilities:
~ Contributing four to five (4-5) articles per academic year. This
translates to writing one (1) article roughly every other month between
September and May.
~ The Features Editor must submit all articles to the Submissions Edtior by
the monthly submissions deadline. The Features Edtior must agree to
allow the Copy Editors, Executive Editor, and the Editor-In-Chief
edit their articles for length, grammar, and punctuation. These
Editors will never make changes that significantly alter the content or
character of the piece.
~ Select, Contact and Interview one (1) Law School student candidate for
"Hot Bench" every month between September and May.
~ Select, Contact and Interview one (1) Law School student candidate for
"Cold Call" every month between September and May.
~ Select, Contact and Interview one (1) Law School club/organization for
"Witness Stand" every month between September and May.
~ Responsible for the assignment and review of all other monthly Opinion
features in every issue.
~ Submit all columns to The Opinion by the submission deadline of their
assigned months.
~ Maintain any and all confidential information obtained in the course of
their work for The Opinion.

FINANCIAL OFFICER:
We are looking to fill approximately one (1) financial officer position.
Basic Responsibilities:
~ The Financial Officer will have the independent authority to write
articles for The Opinion at their will. We do request that our Financial
Officer contribute articles to The Opinion at least twice (2) during the
academic year.
~ The Financial Officer must submit all articles to the Submissions Edtior by
the monthly submissions deadline. The Financial Officer must agree to
allow the Copy Editors, Executive Editor, and the Editor-In-Chief
edit their articles for length, grammar, and punctuation. These
Editors will never make changes that significantly alter the content or
character of the piece.
~ Coordinate with the Editors-In-Chief and the Executive Officer
regarding the budget for The Opinion. Generally responsible for the
financial management of The Opinion.
~ Responsible for soliciting ad's from on and off-campus businesses to be
printed in the issues of The Opinion.
~ Submit all columns to The Opinion by the submission deadline of their
assigned months.
~ Maintain any and all confidential information obtained in the course of
their work for The Opinion.
